Ditching the solemn, angst-y adolescent look that she usually sports on and off stage, 17-year-old Lorde –real name Ella Yelich-O’Connor - is the cover girl for the May 2014 issue of Teen Vogue.
Wearing a red, white, and black patterned top with matching scarf and captivating readers with her bright blue eyes, Lorde tells the publication that she’s been wanting to pose for them for quite some time. The Grammy Award-winning singer says that she may have glammed it up for the magazine, but admits she’s has a much more simple style when it comes to her every day life.
“[There are] expectations in [the] industry about looking a certain way.[…]I am feminine. but I really love dressing in boys’ clothes too. I guess that’s why I get labeled as ‘the grumpy girl,’ because I don’t play into that.”
She’s also been relishing in her newfound fame, saying that in her home country of New Zealand, nothing even close to something like this happens.
“Living in New Zealand, you don’t get these experiences. I spent so much time in my room before. My life is so wild right now. For me to be able to do something I really enjoy and for that to get me out in the world—to South America, to here, to London—every day I kick myself, I’m so lucky.”
